Further to our snippet yesterday, Defra has now confirmed the introduction of a mandatory housing order for all poultry keepers in England to take effect at one minute past midnight on Monday 7 November. The housing order will apply to all poultry flocks regardless of size or whether or not they are operated as a business. The move is in response to a significant increase in the number of confirmed avian influenza cases.
Biosecurity guidance and a biosecurity self-assessment checklist have also been published by Defra.
The standing advice on bird ‘flu and gamebirds continues to apply and can be viewed at this link. The standing advice covers biosecurity measures and confirms that, in common with all commercially reared or domestic poultry, shot birds can safely be eaten as long as they are properly cooked.
